What the X13 rackmount is for

The X13 1U/2U is the general-purpose server most businesses actually need: a dense, efficient Intel Xeon platform that runs the virtualisation, line-of-business applications, databases and services a Maltese operation depends on. The 1U suits compute-dense roles where rack space is tight; the 2U adds drive bays and expansion for storage-heavier or GPU-assisted work. Because it is configured to order, the same platform becomes a virtualisation host, an application server, or a building block in a resilient DataCore software-defined storage cluster, which is one of the ways we deploy it most often for operators who want high-availability storage without a proprietary array.

Who it is for

It fits almost every sector Sirap serves, and especially the regulated finance and iGaming operators who want core infrastructure on hardware they control. Where the workload is AI acceleration at scale, step up to a 4U Universal GPU server; where it is bulk capacity, see the X13 4U storage server; where it is a desk-side professional machine, the X13 Super Workstation. This article explains how the rackmount tier fits a wider on-premise design: on-premise AI compute for regulated operators.

A common job: the MGA replication server

One specific role this server fills for MGA-licensed iGaming operators is the regulatory replication target. If your live platform is hosted outside Malta, the MGA requires a real-time replicated copy of your player, financial and game-play data on a known, inspectable server in Malta. That replica is a database and storage workload rather than a GPU one, which is exactly what a dual-socket X13 rackmount is built for, optionally on a DataCore mirrored pool for resilience. Our guide to the iGaming replication server requirement explains what the MGA asks for and how we build it.

Key features

1U or 2U to match the job. The 1U is the density and efficiency choice; the 2U trades a little space for more drives, more expansion and room for an accelerator.

Dual-socket Intel Xeon Scalable. Two current-generation Xeon Scalable processors with DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0 expansion give the headroom for dense virtualisation and demanding applications.

Built to consolidate. Enough cores and memory to collapse several older servers into one maintainable, efficient platform, which is usually where the cost case starts.

A natural DataCore node. Two of these with synchronously mirrored storage make a high-availability pool that survives a whole server failing, without locking you to a single-vendor SAN.

The X13 is a configure-to-order platform, so processor, memory, storage and networking are specified to the workload rather than sold as a fixed SKU. Sirap confirms the exact build against the current Supermicro datasheet as part of the quote, and will not list a figure it cannot stand behind.

What is in scope from Sirap

For the X13 rackmount the value is in the specification and the integration, not the box. We size the processor, memory and storage to your real virtualisation or application load, design the resilience (including DataCore mirroring where high availability matters), integrate it with your network and storage, and support it from Malta. For regulated operators we configure it to sit cleanly inside your continuity and access-control thinking from the start.

Often paired with

  • DataCore software-defined storage to turn a pair of these into a high-availability pool, and a storage server for bulk capacity behind it.
  • An Eaton UPS with monitored, clean power and automated shutdown. Sirap has been an Eaton power partner since 1988.
  • A GPU server when AI workloads outgrow what the rackmount can host.

Could this be grant-funded?

Server consolidation and infrastructure modernisation can align with Malta Enterprise schemes such as Digitalise Your SME or the Smart & Sustainable Investment Grant. Fit depends on the project. Read our guide and see if your project qualifies, or talk to a Sirap engineer.

Frequently asked questions

1U or 2U, how do I choose?
Choose 1U for compute density where rack space and efficiency lead, and 2U where you need more drives, more expansion slots or room for an accelerator. We size this to your actual workload during the quote.

Can these be DataCore storage nodes?
Yes, and it is one of our common deployments. Two X13 servers running DataCore with synchronous mirroring give resilient, high-availability shared storage that survives a whole node failing, without a proprietary array.

Is it configured to order or a fixed model?
Configured to order. Processor, memory, storage and networking are specified to your workload, which is why we quote the exact build rather than publishing a single spec sheet.
