The FS200T is part of Synology’s FlashStation line, the all-flash family that until recently meant a rackmount unit destined for a server room. The FS200T brings that same flash-only design into a small desktop chassis that sits quietly next to a workstation. It takes six 2.5-inch SATA SSDs and nothing else: there are no 3.5-inch hard-drive bays, because the entire point of the unit is to remove spinning disks and the latency that comes with them. For a small studio, a professional office or an edge location that needs fast, consistent storage without the noise, heat and rack of an enterprise box, it fills a gap the rest of the Synology range does not.

How the FS200T is different from a normal Synology NAS

Most Synology units people are familiar with, the DS-series DiskStations, are hybrid by design: large 3.5-inch hard drives for capacity, with an optional SSD cache bolted in front to soften the worst of the latency. That is the right architecture when you need many terabytes cheaply and your workload is mostly large, sequential files. The FS200T takes the opposite position. Every bay holds an SSD, so there is no slow tier to fall back to and no cache to warm up. Performance is consistent from the first request to the millionth, which matters most for workloads made of many small, random reads and writes rather than a few big sequential ones.

The practical differences fall out from that one decision. The unit is near-silent, because there are no mechanical drives to spin or seek, only fans, and it idles at around 21 dB(A). It draws little power for the performance it delivers, in the region of 65W in use, so it runs cool enough to sit in an occupied room. And it is physically small, roughly the footprint of a shoebox, where an equivalent-throughput hybrid setup would need more bays and more space to reach the same random-IO numbers. The trade-off is honest and worth stating plainly: flash costs more per terabyte than hard drives, so the FS200T is about speed, silence and consistency in a modest capacity envelope, not about storing the largest possible archive for the lowest price.

What it is good at, and who it is for

The FS200T earns its place wherever latency, not raw capacity, is the constraint. Its strengths are specific:

  • Consistent low latency under mixed load. Because there is no hard-disk tier, response time does not collapse when several people hit the unit at once or when a workload turns random. That is the single biggest reason to choose all-flash over a cached hybrid.
  • Many small files handled well. Photo catalogues, design asset libraries, code repositories and database files are made of thousands of small objects. Spinning disks are slow at this; flash is not.
  • Quiet enough to share a room. No drive noise and low heat output mean it can live on or under a desk in a studio or office rather than being banished to a cupboard.
  • 2.5GbE networking as standard. A 2.5GbE port plus a 1GbE port means a single modern workstation can pull more than gigabit speeds without needing a 10GbE switch and the cost that comes with it.
  • Full DSM software. It runs the same DiskStation Manager operating system as the rest of the range, so snapshots, Btrfs data integrity, Hyper Backup, Synology Drive, Active Backup and the rest are all available. You gain flash performance without losing the software platform.

Typical buyers are creative professionals, small architecture and design practices, software teams, and small offices that want responsive shared storage without enterprise noise, power and cost. It is also a sensible choice for an edge or branch site where a fast, compact, low-maintenance unit needs to sit in a working space rather than a rack.

A photography or video studio working off shared catalogues

A studio with three or four editors working from a shared Lightroom or DaVinci catalogue spends its day issuing thousands of small random reads as thumbnails, previews and metadata are pulled. On a hybrid NAS this is exactly the pattern that defeats an SSD cache, because the working set is larger than the cache and constantly shifting. An all-flash FS200T serves every one of those reads at flash speed, so the catalogue stays responsive with several people scrubbing at once. The 2.5GbE link gives each editor more than gigabit throughput for pulling full-resolution files when they need them.

A small office running a few virtual machines or a database

Virtual-machine datastores and database files are latency-sensitive and random by nature. A handful of VMs or a busy line-of-business database on spinning disks will feel sluggish; on the FS200T they sit on flash from the first block, with no cache to miss. For a small office that wants to consolidate a couple of VMs and a shared database onto one quiet box without building a rack, this is a clean fit.

A branch or edge site that needs speed in a working space

A branch office, a clinic or a site office often needs fast local storage but has nowhere to put a noisy, power-hungry rack unit. The FS200T’s silence, low power draw and small footprint let it live on a shelf in an occupied room, while DSM’s built-in tools replicate it back to a central Synology at head office over Hyper Backup or Snapshot Replication. Fast where it is used, protected where it matters.

When a different Synology is the right call

The FS200T is the wrong unit if your main need is bulk capacity at the lowest cost per terabyte. Flash is several times the price of hard-disk storage, and that gap has widened during the 2026 NAND price surge, so storing tens of terabytes of archive footage or backups all on flash makes little economic sense. If you need large, mostly sequential capacity, a hybrid DS-series or RackStation with hard drives and an SSD cache will serve you better for the money. If you need flash performance but at far larger scale or in a rack, the enterprise FlashStation and the PAS-series are the right direction. The FS200T’s sweet spot is modest-capacity, latency-sensitive work in a quiet, occupied space. Tell us your workload and we will point you to the honest fit, even when that is not this unit.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose all-flash over a hard-drive NAS with an SSD cache?
An SSD cache only accelerates the data that happens to be in the cache. When your working set is larger than the cache or your access pattern is random, requests fall through to slow hard drives and latency spikes. An all-flash unit like the FS200T has no slow tier, so performance stays consistent regardless of how large or random the workload becomes. For many small files and concurrent users, that consistency is the whole point.

Can it use hard drives if I want more capacity later?
No. The FS200T has six 2.5-inch SATA SSD bays and does not accept 3.5-inch hard drives. If you expect to need large bulk capacity, that is a sign a hybrid DS-series or RackStation is the better starting point. We will flag this during sizing.

Does it run the same software as other Synology units?
Yes. It runs DSM, the same operating system as the DiskStation and RackStation ranges, so snapshots, Btrfs data integrity, Hyper Backup, Synology Drive, Active Backup for Business and the rest are all available.

Do I need a 10GbE switch to benefit from it?
No. The built-in 2.5GbE port already gives a single workstation more than double gigabit speed over standard copper cabling and an affordable 2.5GbE switch. You get a real performance lift without the cost of a 10GbE upgrade.

Is one FS200T enough on its own?
For day-to-day storage, yes, but no single unit is a backup. We always configure a second copy, on another Synology and ideally offsite, so a fire, theft or ransomware event cannot take out your only copy. Sirap sets this up as part of the deployment.

What SSDs should go in it?
That depends on your workload. Write-heavy use such as databases or virtual machines calls for higher-endurance drives, while read-heavy catalogues can use more cost-effective ones. We size endurance and capacity to your case rather than fitting whatever is cheapest.
