What the Kodiak 3416 is for

The Kodiak 3416 is a scalable enterprise LTO library. The 3U base module holds 40 slots across two magazines, takes one to three drives, and adds the things a serious retention estate needs: dual redundant hot-swap power supplies, five mail slots for fast media handling, and an operator panel plus secure web management. With LTO-9 the base module holds up to 720 TB native (1,800 TB compressed), and it scales by adding expansion modules, up to 15 on a single base unit, into the petabytes. This is the tier for an organisation whose archive and compliance retention have outgrown a fixed library and that needs both capacity headroom and no single point of failure on power. It anchors the tape end of the design on our backup and data storage page.

Who it is for

Larger Maltese operators with serious, growing retention obligations: finance institutions keeping records for years under MFSA and EU rules, iGaming operators retaining player and transaction data, and any data-heavy business building a long-term, ransomware-proof archive. Where a fixed 24-slot unit is enough, the 2U library is more proportionate; where you need to grow beyond what one 3U base plus expansions covers, the larger Kodiak 6807 scales further.

Key features

40 slots, scalable to petabyte capacity. The 3U base module takes up to 15 expansion modules, so capacity grows without replacing the head unit.

Up to three drives. Run backup and restore in parallel, or present multiple logical libraries, on a single base module.

Dual redundant hot-swap power. Two 80PLUS Gold supplies mean a power-supply failure does not take the library offline, which a single-PSU unit cannot offer.

Five mail slots and a barcode reader. Move batches of media in and out quickly and keep an accurate inventory.

Secure remote management. An operator control panel plus an https web management interface over GbE for configuration, monitoring and analysis.

What is in scope from Sirap

A scalable library is a planned deployment, not a delivery. We work out the capacity and growth curve against your retention obligations, decide base-plus-expansion configuration and drive count, integrate it with your backup and archive software and any tape-management workflow, and design the offsite and air-gap handling so the compliance copy genuinely sits beyond a network attacker’s reach. With dual redundant power and onsite service options, this is specified for sites where the archive cannot be allowed to fail quietly. Supported from Malta.

Often paired with

  • DataCore or Synology disk as the fast recovery tier in a disk-to-disk-to-tape design.
  • Three-phase or rack Eaton power for a library that runs continuously.
  • The Kodiak 6807 where capacity needs to scale beyond the 3416’s reach.

Could this be grant-funded?

A long-term retention and continuity investment of this scale can align with Malta Enterprise schemes such as the Smart & Sustainable Investment Grant or, for larger strategic projects, the Invest measures, if you apply before committing. Read our guide and see if your project qualifies, or talk to a Sirap engineer.

Frequently asked questions

How far does it scale?
The 3U base module holds 40 slots and takes up to 15 expansion modules, scaling capacity into the petabytes without replacing the head unit. We plan the base-plus-expansion path so you buy growth headroom rather than a forklift upgrade later.

Why does dual redundant power matter here?
On a library holding your only offline compliance copy, a single power supply is a single point of failure. The Kodiak’s two hot-swap supplies mean a PSU can fail and be replaced without the library going down, which the fixed 2U unit cannot offer.

Can it run more than one backup stream?
Yes. With up to three drives it can present multiple logical libraries and run backup and restore in parallel, which matters on a busy estate.
