What the actiLib 1U is for

The actiLib 1U is an LTO tape autoloader: eight cartridge slots across two swappable magazines, served by a single LTO drive that loads and changes tapes automatically. It is the step up from a standalone drive for a business that wants unattended, scheduled backup without manually swapping a cartridge every day, and the entry point into offline, air-gapped tape protection. Because the tapes come out of the drive and can leave the building, a backup on LTO is reach-proof to ransomware in a way a disk target on the network is not. It suits SMBs protecting servers, NAS volumes and archives, and pairs with the disk tiers covered on our backup and data storage page.

Who it is for

Small and mid-sized Maltese businesses that need automated backup and a true offline copy: professional services, clinics, small finance firms with record-retention duties, and any operation whose data has outgrown a single external drive. Where you only back up one server and are happy to load a tape by hand, the standalone actiTape external drive is the simpler choice; where you need more slots and capacity, step up to the 2U library.

Key features

8 slots, two swappable magazines. Enough capacity for a weekly rotation with tapes you can remove and store offsite, and magazines that lift out for fast media handling.

Automated, unattended backup. The single LTO drive loads and changes cartridges on schedule, so backups run without someone swapping a tape each night.

Barcode reader as standard. Quick media inventory and reliable tracking of which cartridge holds which backup set.

Web remote management. Configure, monitor and diagnose the unit over the network, so routine administration does not need a person at the rack.

SAS or Fibre Channel. Connects to your server or backup host over a powerful SAS or FC interface, driven by standard backup software.

What is in scope from Sirap

For the actiLib 1U the work is getting a dependable backup routine running, not just shipping a box. We size the LTO generation and media count to your data volume and retention, integrate the unit with your backup software (Veeam, Veritas, Acronis and the like), set up the rotation and offsite handling so an air-gapped copy actually leaves the building, and supply genuine LTO media locally so a tape is never the thing you are waiting on. Supported from Malta.

Often paired with

  • Synology or other disk storage as the fast primary backup, with LTO as the offline, long-retention copy (disk-to-disk-to-tape).
  • An Eaton UPS so a backup is never cut mid-write.
  • The actiTape external drive at smaller sites and the 2U library when you outgrow 8 slots.

Could this be grant-funded?

Investing in backup and business-continuity infrastructure can align with Malta Enterprise schemes such as Digitalise Your SME, provided you apply before committing to the purchase. Read our guide and see if your project qualifies, or talk to a Sirap engineer.

Frequently asked questions

How is an autoloader different from a single tape drive?
A standalone drive holds one tape at a time and someone has to swap it. The 1U autoloader holds 8 tapes and changes them automatically, so scheduled backups run unattended across a weekly rotation rather than relying on someone remembering to load a cartridge.

Why tape if we already back up to disk?
Disk on the network can be reached by the same ransomware that hits production. A tape that has been written and removed is physically offline, an air gap a network attack cannot cross. The usual design is disk for fast recovery plus tape for the offline, long-retention copy.

Which LTO generation should we use?
That depends on how much you back up and how long you keep it. We size the generation and the number of cartridges to your data and retention at quote, and supply the media locally.
