What the actiTape 1U Professional is for

The actiTape LTO 1U Professional is a single LTO tape drive in a 1U rackmount chassis, connected to a server or host over SAS and driven by your backup software. It does the same job as the desktop actiTape external drive, providing a true offline, air-gapped copy on a removable cartridge, but in a form factor built for the rack alongside the systems it protects. There is no automation: you load and unload the cartridge by hand. That simplicity is the point for a single server or a site that wants a genuine offline backup in the rack without the cost of an autoloader. With LTO-9 a cartridge holds 18 TB native (up to 45 TB compressed). It is the rack-mounted entry point to the actiData range on our backup and data storage page.

Who it is for

Sites that already run a rack and want offline tape backup in it: a single server, a Synology NAS being copied to tape, or a small finance firm needing a removable, retained copy. How is this different from the external actiTape drive?

Why a drive rather than an autoloader?
A standalone drive is the simplest and lowest-cost way into offline tape backup when you are happy to load a cartridge by hand. When that manual step becomes a daily chore or you need an unattended rotation, the 8-slot 1U autoloader is the next step, and we will tell you when you have reached it.
