If your UPS battery is approaching four years old, it is time to plan a replacement. The UPS itself can run for a decade, but the battery inside it is a consumable that loses capacity steadily and then fails, usually with no warning, at the exact moment you need it during an outage. How long a battery lasts depends on its design-life rating, the temperature it runs at and how often it discharges, and the warning you get, if any, depends on the quality of the UPS. How long does a UPS battery last?
Most UPS batteries last around three to five years in practice, but the rating to look at is the battery’s design life, and not all batteries are the same. Sealed lead-acid (VRLA) UPS batteries are sold in different design-life classes: a general-purpose battery is typically rated for around five years, while a long-life battery is rated for ten to twelve years. The longer-life battery costs more up front but is replaced far less often, which usually works out cheaper and means fewer service visits over the life of the UPS, so it is worth choosing deliberately rather than defaulting to whatever is cheapest. Lithium-ion UPS batteries go further still, with an eight to ten year service life, and they tolerate heat better, which is why Eaton offers lithium options such as the 9PX Lithium-ion for sites where battery access is hard or replacement downtime is costly.
Two things to keep in mind. First, design life is rated under ideal conditions, around 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, and the actual service life is usually shorter, because every 10 degrees above that can roughly halve it; a five-year battery in a hot cupboard may give three. Second, the design-life rating is the planning figure, not a guarantee, so even a ten-year battery should be tested and monitored rather than assumed good until year ten. What are the signs a UPS battery needs replacing?
Do not wait for the UPS to fail completely. Watch for a few common signs: the unit takes much longer to charge than it used to, which points to reduced capacity; it beeps frequently or reports a battery fault; it shuts down unexpectedly during a short outage that it used to ride through; or the battery shows any physical change such as bulging, swelling, heat or leaks. A UPS that fails its self-test, or one that simply will not hold the runtime you sized it for, has told you the battery is done. The trouble is that these signs assume the UPS is actually checking and reporting, which brings us to the next point.
Why might your UPS not warn you the battery has failed?
Many lower-tier UPS units, and cheaper brands, give you no real warning that the battery has degraded, so the first you know of it is when the power cuts and the UPS does not carry the load. A basic UPS may do little more than a crude voltage check, or test the battery so rarely that a failing cell goes unnoticed for months. The battery quietly loses capacity, the front panel still shows a healthy charge, and then a genuine outage arrives and the runtime you assumed you had is simply not there. The protection was gone long before the day it was needed, and nobody knew.
This is where battery management earns its place. Can an old UPS battery be a fire hazard?
Yes, an old or failing UPS battery can be a safety risk, which is another reason not to leave it past its life. As lead-acid batteries age and fail they can swell, overheat and vent gas, and in the worst case a damaged or overcharged cell can lead to thermal runaway, a self-feeding overheating that is a genuine fire risk in a rack or cupboard. A swollen or hot battery is a clear signal to stop and replace it, not to wait. Timely replacement removes that risk, and so does proper disposal: a used battery left lying in a store room or thrown in with general waste is both a hazard and, for lead-acid, an environmental offence. The safe path is to replace the battery before it fails and to hand the old one to someone equipped to deal with it.
