We supply and fit Yuasa batteries in Malta for UPS units: 12V sealed lead-acid blocks matched to your UPS, fitted on site, with the old set taken away for recycling. If your UPS is beeping or failing its self-test and you are not sure the battery is the cause, our guide to when a UPS battery needs replacing covers the signs.

Why we fit Yuasa batteries

A UPS is only as good as the battery behind it, and the battery is where cheap replacements cut corners. We fit Yuasa because, in our experience, they last longer in a UPS than the unbranded blocks that often come with budget units. Yuasa has made sealed lead-acid batteries for more than fifty years and gives the NP range a 5-year design life, with a EUROBAT “Standard Commercial” classification of 3 to 5 years. They also recover well from a deep discharge, which is exactly what a long power cut does to a UPS battery.

A battery that lasts longer is fewer site visits and fewer surprises: the UPS that has to carry your servers through the next cut is less likely to find a worn battery when it does.

Which UPS battery do you need?

Tell us the UPS model, or send a photo of the label on the old battery, and we will confirm the part. Fit depends on three things: capacity, terminal size and how many blocks the unit takes. The 12V 7Ah size is common in desktop and rack UPS units, alarm panels and access control power supplies, and larger UPS units and Eaton UPS battery modules use sets of the same kind of block wired together.

The NP7-12 and NPW45-12 share the same footprint, but they are not always interchangeable. The NPW45-12 is Yuasa’s high-rate block, rated in watts per cell for the short, heavy discharge of a power cut, and it uses the larger 6.35 mm terminal. Where your UPS was built for the standard NP7-12, that is the right and cheaper choice. The NPH5-12 is a smaller 5Ah block for compact units.

What a replacement battery will and will not fix

A new set restores the runtime the UPS had when it was new, at the same load. It will not add runtime beyond the unit’s design, fix a failed charger or inverter, or keep a UPS going that no longer has spare parts or firmware support. In those cases replacing the UPS is the better spend, and the UPS sizing guide helps you check what you need now.

When a UPS has more than one battery, we replace the whole set. Batteries wired in series age together, and a single new block alongside old ones is worn down to their level.

What a sealed VRLA battery does in a UPS

These are valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries with absorbed glass mat (AGM) construction. The electrolyte is held in a glass-fibre separator, so there is no liquid acid to spill in normal use and nothing to top up. They can be mounted upright or on their side (not continuously upside down), which helps in tight UPS trays.

The 5-year design life assumes 20°C. Heat shortens it, so batteries in a warm cupboard or server room usually need replacing sooner. We recommend a yearly UPS test and planning the replacement from the third year.

Old batteries recycled under the ERA scheme

Lead-acid batteries cannot go in general waste. Sirap is registered with ERA’s waste management scheme for producers of batteries and accumulators, so when we fit a new set we take the old batteries away and send them for recycling, at no extra step for you. Our guide on when a UPS battery is due also explains how we collect and recycle them.

Frequently asked questions

Which Yuasa battery fits my UPS?

It depends on the UPS model: capacity, terminal and the number of blocks all have to match. Send us the model or a photo of the old battery’s label and we will confirm the part before ordering.

Do you fit the batteries on site?

Yes. For businesses we usually replace batteries during a UPS visit: we swap the set, test the runtime under your real load and check that the shutdown signal to your servers and NAS still works.

What happens to the old batteries?

We take them away when we fit the new set and recycle them under the ERA scheme (see above).
