When a label is the answer, apply it properly

There are times when a peel-and-stick label is genuinely the right choice: a customer mandates a specific label format, the surface will not take direct print, or you need a GS1 logistics label on a defined corner of every pallet. The question then is how the label gets applied. Hand-application is slow, inconsistent and prone to the wrong label on the wrong box. The Domino Mx-Series prints the label and applies it automatically, in the correct position, every cycle.

A print-and-apply system takes variable data from your WMS or ERP, prints a fresh label on demand, and an applicator places it precisely onto the case, tray or pallet as it passes. That removes the two biggest risks of manual labelling: misplacement and mismatched data. For end-of-line case coding and pallet labelling, the Mx-Series gives you repeatable GS1-128 and SSCC placement at line speed, with the audit trail your customers increasingly expect.

Print-and-apply is not always the lowest-cost route. For high-volume coding on absorbent corrugate, direct printing with the Domino Cx-Series usually costs less per case because it removes label and ribbon consumables. Many sites run Cx and Mx together: direct print where they can, labels where they must. Sirap helps you draw that line.

What is in scope from Sirap

Sirap has been Malta’s Domino partner since 1981. A print-and-apply installation lives or dies on label placement and data accuracy, and our scope is built around getting both right:

  • Site survey and line integration — we assess your conveyor, pack format and the faces that need labelling, then specify the applicator type and hand of machine to suit.
  • Installation and commissioning — mounting, product-detect and applicator setup, with label templates built to your GS1-128 and SSCC formats.
  • WMS/ERP integration — connecting the Mx controller to your system so the right variable data prints on the right pack automatically.
  • Operator and maintenance training — including optional Maltese-language operator training so your floor team is confident from day one.
  • Genuine Domino labels, ribbon and parts — held locally, with a defined parts SLA. Ask us about current stock and turnaround.
  • Ongoing support — preventive maintenance schedules and engineer callout from a team based here in Malta.

Could this be grant-funded?

Automating label print-and-apply removes manual handling, reduces mislabelled and rejected pallets, and connects your line data to your WMS, which supports both an efficiency and a digitalisation case. That makes the Mx-Series a candidate for Malta Enterprise schemes such as Digitalise Your SME and the Smart & Sustainable Investment Grant. To see which scheme suits your project and what the application needs, read our funding guide and see if your project qualifies, or talk to a Sirap engineer.

Frequently asked questions

When should I choose print-and-apply over direct printing?
Choose print-and-apply when a customer mandates a specific label format, when the surface will not take direct ink, or when you need a GS1 logistics label on a defined face or corner of a pallet. For high-volume coding on absorbent corrugate, direct printing with the Cx-Series is usually more economical. The two often run together.

Which faces of the pack can the Mx-Series label?
It depends on the model and applicator. The Mx350i-T applies to the top, side and bottom of cases; the Mx350i-S and SP apply to the front, back, top, side and corner of cartons, with the SP offering extended reach. Sirap specifies the applicator and hand of machine for the faces you need during the survey.

Will it pull data from our WMS or ERP?
Yes. The Mx controller takes static, dynamic and variable data from your WMS or ERP over standard industrial connections, so each label carries the correct batch, date and SSCC automatically. Integration scope is confirmed at the survey stage.

What can it label besides cases?
The Mx-Series applies labels to cases, trays, shrink wrap, pallets, kegs and bags, with the right applicator. Tell us your pack formats and we will confirm what is achievable.

How accurate is the placement?
The applicator places each label in the same position every cycle, which is the main advantage over hand-application. Exact tolerance depends on the applicator and pack handling, confirmed during commissioning against your placement requirement.

What ongoing maintenance does it need?
Routine care covers the printhead, applicator and label path. Sirap provides preventive maintenance schedules and supplies genuine Domino labels, ribbon and parts locally.

How long does installation take?
This depends on line complexity and integration scope. Sirap gives you a realistic timeline after the site survey, including commissioning and operator training.
