When you need a label printer that does not stop

A desktop printer is fine until the volume climbs or the environment turns industrial. The moment labelling becomes part of how the operation runs, every hour of finished goods, every inbound pallet, every batch, a printer that jams, drifts out of registration or wears out its printhead becomes an expensive problem. The Zebra ZT400 Series is the answer to that: a metal-framed industrial printer designed for high-duty thermal transfer printing in manufacturing, warehousing, transport and logistics, where the printer is expected to run all day and be easy to keep running.

The range is built around two body sizes and a set of field-installable options, so you specify one to your job rather than buying more printer than you need. The four-inch ZT411 covers the large majority of product, shipping and warehouse labels. The six-inch ZT421 prints wider labels for pallet placards, drum and chemical labels, and large compliance labels. Both can be ordered with UHF RFID encoding, including Zebra’s on-metal option, so the same printer can print and encode RFID tags as well as plain barcodes. This page sets out the differences so you can see which configuration fits, and is honest about when a smaller printer or a different technology is the better buy.

ZT411 or ZT421: which one do you need?

The choice is mostly about label width and resolution. The figures below compare the two models on the specifications that decide it. Sirap confirms the exact configuration, options and supplies for your application during the survey.

In practice, most Maltese warehouse and manufacturing deployments land on the 203 dpi ZT411, which gives the fastest throughput and prints standard barcodes and text cleanly. Step up to 300 dpi when labels carry small fonts, dense 2D codes or fine logos, and to 600 dpi only for very small, highly detailed labels such as electronics or laboratory work. Choose the ZT421 when the label itself is wider than four inches.

What can you do with RFID on these printers?

Both models can be ordered as RFID printer-encoders, which print a barcode label and encode a UHF RFID tag inside it in the same pass. That matters if you are moving toward item or asset tracking, because it lets you adopt RFID without changing how labels are produced. The ZT411 additionally offers Zebra’s On-Metal RFID option, which is built to encode thicker RFID labels designed to work on metal containers and assets, a case where ordinary RFID labels struggle. If RFID is not on your roadmap, you simply order the standard model and add encoding later, because the option is configurable rather than a different printer.

Will it work with our existing labels and software?

Almost certainly, and this is one of the main reasons to stay with Zebra. The ZT400 Series runs ZPL and ZPL II, the label languages most existing label templates and warehouse systems already speak, and it also supports EPL, which makes migrating from an older Zebra desktop or industrial printer straightforward. In most cases your existing label formats print on the new machine without being rebuilt. For sites running other printer brands, Zebra’s Virtual Devices can interpret some competitor languages, which removes a common barrier to standardising on one fleet. Sirap confirms compatibility with your WMS, ERP or label software during the survey so there are no surprises on the day.

What is in scope from Sirap

Buying the printer is the easy part. What makes a labelling station reliable is the setup around it, and that is where Sirap works:

  • Specifying the right variant — width, resolution, RFID and media-handling options matched to your labels and volume, so you are not paying for capability you will not use or boxed in by a printer that is too small.
  • Label and template setup — getting your ZPL formats, GS1 barcodes and variable data printing correctly from your WMS, ERP or label software.
  • RFID encoding setup — where ordered, configuring and verifying tag encoding, including on-metal applications.
  • Genuine Zebra supplies — labels, ribbons and RFID media matched to your printer and held locally, because the wrong label or ribbon is the fastest way to ruin a printhead. See our genuine Zebra supplies.
  • Support and uptime — Zebra OneCare service cover and engineer support from a team based here in Malta, so a printer fault does not become a labelling outage.

When a different choice is the right one

The ZT400 Series is an industrial printer, and not every job needs one. If you print a modest number of labels a day in an office or light-commercial setting, a Zebra ZD-Series desktop printer costs less and takes up less space, and we will tell you so rather than oversell. If your real task is coding outer cases and pallets at high volume, printing a label may be the wrong approach entirely: direct coding with the Domino Cx-Series removes the label, ribbon and applicator from the equation and usually costs less per case, as we explain in our guide to direct case and pallet printing. The ZT400 is the right tool when you genuinely need durable, high-volume label printing, with or without RFID. Knowing when you do not is part of what you are paying a local partner for.

Could this be grant-funded?

If new labelling or RFID is part of a wider warehouse or traceability upgrade, the project may qualify for Malta Enterprise co-funding under the digitalisation or investment schemes, particularly where it connects your labelling to your systems and improves tracking. The key rule is to apply before you commit to the purchase. Our guide to Malta Enterprise grants for coding and labelling explains which scheme fits and how to keep the application valid.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the ZT411 and the ZT421?
Print width. The ZT411 prints up to 104 mm wide on media up to 114 mm, which covers most product and shipping labels. The ZT421 prints up to 168 mm wide on media up to 178 mm, for wide pallet, drum and compliance labels. The ZT411 also offers a 600 dpi option that the ZT421 does not.

Which print resolution should I choose?
203 dpi for standard barcodes and text at the fastest speed, which suits most warehouse and shipping labels. 300 dpi for small fonts, dense 2D codes or fine graphics. 600 dpi only for very small, highly detailed labels, and only on the ZT411.

Can it print and encode RFID tags?
Yes, when ordered as an RFID variant. Both models encode UHF RFID, and the ZT411 offers an On-Metal RFID option for tagging metal assets and containers. You can also buy the standard printer now and move to RFID later.

Will our existing Zebra label formats work on it?
In most cases, yes. The ZT400 runs ZPL and ZPL II and supports EPL, so existing templates and a migration from an older Zebra printer are usually straightforward. Sirap verifies this against your software during the survey.

Is Wi-Fi included?
Ethernet, USB, dual USB host, serial and Bluetooth 4.1 are standard. 802.11ac Wi-Fi is an option via the dual-band wireless card, which can be specified at order or added later.

Do I have to use Zebra labels and ribbons?
You do not have to, but it is the cheapest insurance for your printhead. Mismatched or low-grade supplies are a leading cause of printhead wear and poor print quality. Sirap supplies genuine Zebra media matched to your printer and labels.

How long do the printheads last, and can they be replaced?
Printhead life depends on label volume, darkness settings and supplies. The ZT400 is designed for easy printhead replacement as a routine service part, and using matched supplies extends its life. Sirap holds printheads and can service the printer locally.

Models available

The ZT400 Series is sold in many configurations across the ZT411 and ZT421, combining resolution (203, 300 or 600 dpi), RFID and on-metal RFID, media handling (peeler, cutter, liner take-up, rewinder) and connectivity (including Wi-Fi). Rather than list every SKU here, tell us your label size, resolution, volume and whether you need RFID, and Sirap will quote the exact variant and part number. A full variant and SKU list can be provided on request.
